Axel Salto, unique vase for Royal Copenhagen

 ON HOLD

Axel Salto, rare piece of uniquely crafted pottery from Royal Copenhagen, with an unusual form of speckled glossy glaze in cream and brown tones covering the surface. The vase has a "Salto" signature and incised RC waves, together with an "I" (or "H", depending on the angle viewed from),- very unusual for RC pieces, which usually are made of stoneware, glazed in the bottom and signature painted / printed under the transparent glaze. This, and the fact that the inner side of the vase has rounded transitions between the walls and bottom, are indicators that this piece is an individual, probably hand-made proto type by Axel Salto meant for serial production. The height is 10 cm. (C.4 ') tall and it's in perfect condition.

The leading proponents of the Danish Modern design movement, among others Arne Jacobsen, Hans Wegner, Finn Juhl and B. Mogensen who united with manufacturers as C.M Madsen, Andreas Tuck or Ry Mobler, created a style that reverberated around the globe. The result was elegant, bold, sensual and functional furniture design, with a level of craftsmanship unsurpassed in the history of 20th century design. Originally the Danish design movement of the mid 20th century had its roots in a 400 year-old Cabinetmakers Guild tradition. Furniture craftsmen, concerned by the trend towards mass production, established partnerships with the leading designers of the time and set about creating furniture that utilized their highly refined skills, at the same time responding to the requirements of modern living. This partnership came to fruition in the late 1940's at a time when the world, ravaged by WWII., was longing for a new, fresh beginning.

The Chair (No. 501/the round chair)

Category: Seating , Chairs

Style: Scandinavian

Material: Wood , Cover , Teak , Leather

Quantity: 1

Design history

Designer: Hans J. Wegner ( )

Maker: Johannes Hansen , Denmark

Measurement:         H: 76/46 cm. w. 63 cm. d. 52 cm.

Danish master craftsman Hans J. Wegner believed that a chair should be made well enough to last at least 50 years. His iconic The Chair may be the ultimate expression of that philosophy. Wegner never named his chairs. The first was called number 1, the second number 2, and so on. Wegner designed more than 500 chairs during his career, and the reason why some of them carry a name, is because of the producers and clients. Number 501 or "the round one" as Wegner himself called it, was first exhibited in 1949. One year later it was shown on the cover of the American magazine Interiors, who refered to it as the world's most beautiful chair. The clean wood design is stripped to its bare essentials, a sculptural semicircle resting on four tapered legs with a cane or leather seat suspended between them. The empty space that separates the back from the seat, gives the piece an elegance and economy of form that results in greater comfort, not less. In 1960, the TV company CBS bought twelve copies of the chair for the first live broadcast of an election debate; between John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon. It was Kennedy who requested this chair, he wanted a comfortable chair for his aching back. 70 million people watched the Wegner chair on live broadcast and it was even mentioned in the newspaper election reports the day after. Afterwards the CBS manager, donated the twelve chairs to the Smithsonian Institute.

The present chair is in mint condition
